The Phlebotomy Program is scheduled every fall and spring.
Phlebotomy Technicians are in demand as one of the fastest growing occupations in healthcare. Launch your career as a Phlebotomy Technician, collecting blood samples from patients in a hospital, clinical laboratory, medical office, or clinic. This course provides a complete learning experience—with 48 hours of classroom instruction and a 40-hour hands-on externship, and prepares you to take the National Certification Exam and Licensure through Department of Health Services-Laboratory Field Services to become a Certified Phlebotomy Technician 1.
Because the local Phlebotomy job market is tight, not many new jobs, we give priority admission to candidates who already work for a medical business and who have been offered a Phlebotomy position with their current employer.
This program is designed to fulfill the training requirements to become a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPTI) for the State of California. Upon meeting the admission requirements, satisfactorily completing the didactic and externship portions of the program, and receiving a passing grade on an approved national certifying exam plus certification from such agency, the student will be able to apply for a CPTI license from the Laboratory Field Services, California Department of Health Services.
The class is taught through lectures, class exercises (basic and advanced), and clinical experiences at local externship sites (practical). Students will be trained to perform a variety of blood collection methods using the proper techniques. These methods include the evacuated tube system, syringe collection, winged infusion collection, and capillary puncture on adults, children, and infants.
