PROGRAM DETAILS

The Phlebotomy Program is scheduled every fall and spring. 

  • Interested students must provide evidence of possessing a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Also, candidates must have successfully completed a Medical Terminology class AND must have work experience in a clinical medical setting such as Certified Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant. 
  • Candidates may enroll throughout the school year in our Medical Program Orientation to prepare for Medical programs such as Phlebotomy. Click here for enrollment information.

  • Candidates must meet all program eligibility requirements.

 

Phlebotomy Technicians are in demand as one of the fastest growing occupations in healthcare. Launch your career as a Phlebotomy Technician, collecting blood samples from patients in a hospital, clinical laboratory, medical office, or clinic. This course provides a complete learning experience—with 48 hours of classroom instruction and a 40-hour hands-on externship, and prepares you to take the National Certification Exam and Licensure through Department of Health Services-Laboratory Field Services to become a Certified Phlebotomy Technician 1.

  • Because the local Phlebotomy job market is tight, not many new jobs, we give priority admission to candidates who already work for a medical business and who have been offered a Phlebotomy position with their current employer.

    • High school diploma or equivalent required

    • Candidates must have current employment in a medical facility with advancement opportunity based on the earning of Phlebotomy Technician I certification.
    • Strong English skills and fluency
    • Candidates must pass a personal interview for this program
    • Ability to use a computer and to complete online learning assignments, quizzes, etc.
    • Completion with 80% or higher score of Lompoc Adult School's two, free, online Prerequisite Courses: Medical Terminology and Literacy for Medical Professionals OR successful completion of Medical Assistant Certification Program.
  • This program is designed to fulfill the training requirements to become a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPTI) for the State of California. Upon meeting the admission requirements, satisfactorily completing the didactic and externship portions of the program, and receiving a passing grade on an approved national certifying exam plus certification from such agency, the student will be able to apply for a CPTI license from the Laboratory Field Services, California Department of Health Services.

     

    The class is taught through lectures, class exercises (basic and advanced), and clinical experiences at local externship sites (practical). Students will be trained to perform a variety of blood collection methods using the proper techniques. These methods include the evacuated tube system, syringe collection, winged infusion collection, and capillary puncture on adults, children, and infants.

    • Applicants must be 18 years or older and must possess a High School Transcript or have a General Education Diploma (GED) Transcript or show documentation of an equivalent education as described by the State of California. Any of these documents must be available at the time of enrollment.
    • Applicants must be fluent in English since lectures and testing is conducted in English.
    • Computer literacy skills for completing online learning assignments.
    • Completion with 80% or higher score of Lompoc Adult School's free, online Prerequisite Courses: Medical Terminology and Literacy for Medical Professionals OR completion of Medical Assistant Certification.
    • Completed scholarship applications must be submitted by the due date.
    • Students must attend all eight Saturday classes.
    • Classes meet at Lompoc Adult School, 320 North J Street, Lompoc.
    • Completion of all coursework with at least 75% grade.
    • After successful completion of this program, students may arrange payment for and schedule their certification exam through a state-approved provider.  (Some scholarships may pay for this fee, but Lompoc Adult School does not.)
    • After students pass their certification exam, they are eligible to apply for a 40-hour clinical session with our medical provider in Lompoc.
    • Course fee is $1,850.00. This covers the course only and NOT the industry certification assessment.
    • Full scholarships are available to all students.
